Had a client that when they opened a mapped drive on a network on a pc that it would start a notepad. I found this on the Internet to solve this problem.
Search the registry for a key called MountPoints2. When you find the key for the drive that has been mapped expand and you will see shell key. Delete the shell key and this will resolve the issue.

The solution worked for me as well.
So my question now is what caused this. I have been in IT for over 20 years and have never seen this issue
It worked fine thank you. But in a couple of weeks I had to do it again. Any suggestion if it keeps coming back.
Well its a registry fix so it could be that something went wrong and Windows reverted back to an older registry. Or if you ever did a system restore this would do it. Did you install anything between when you fixed it and the week later? It’s hard to say. One other thing is it could be a malware infection. I suggest running a good anti-malware such as malwarebytes. I wrote an article on it so give it a try.
