Sometimes you select the wrong network location on a Windows PC (Public,Private,Domain). Sometimes it switches by itself. Every version of Windows (XP,7,8,10, Server 2008R2,2012, etc) have different locations or ways of switching the network location. Usually for me I have a PC or Server that is sharing a folder or something. If it gets changed to Public then the share will not work. Its frustrating to find out where to change it. Some are easy with a click of a location. Others are more difficult. The easiest way to change it no matter what version of OS you are using is modifying the registry. Here is the info:
You can do it thru the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\
open the network profile that you have to change and modify the “Category” value:
0 = public
1 = private
2 = domain
You might need to reboot afterwards to have the setting change.
