My New Ultimate Multimedia PC

My old Media PC was running out of space and its not the fastest PC. I am getting more blu-ray movies and they take up more space when keeping the HD quality so I decided to splurge and build my Ultimate Multimedia PC. Here is the list of hardware parts I used:

CASE  – Antec Eleven Hundred Case (6 Sata, 2 2.5 HD bays + 3 standard 5 1/4 slots for Optical drives, lots of fans for cooling, USB 3 ports on front) It might be big but it holds all my drives and keeps it cool and quite using the 120mm and the 200mm fan on top.

KEYBOARD/MOUSE – Logitech K400 works well and with distance. Don’t need line of site

REMOTE – Adesso ARC-1100 . Its cheap, has all the buttons needed and has little mouse pad. It does need line 0f site to use

MOTHERBOARD – Asus P8H77-V LE (4 SATA connectors that give RAID 1 + 2 6GB/Sec SATA, USB 3, HDMI out)

CPU – Intel i5-3570 3.4 GHz Quad core

MEMORY – 8 GB DDR3 (2×4 GB dual layer)

POWER SUPPLY – Thermaltake 500Watt

OPTICAL DRIVE – Blu-ray Burner (Watch,Rip and Burn DVD’s and Blu-rays)

HARD DRIVES – 1 2TB WD BLACK (System drive and extra space for ripping,converting,Hyper-V etc)

2 3TB WD RED (RAID 1, most of videos stored)

2 2TB WD GREEN (My older drives from previous media server, RAID 1, more videos and music)

TOTAL STORAGE SPACE 7TB!! If I was not so paranoid and using RAID I could have 12TB!!

Now for the Software. My OS I chose is Windows 8 PRO. Why Windows 8? Well for a few reasons. First it has Hyper-V built in. I normally use VMWare but the advantage of Hyper-V is it will start automatically when booting. Boots faster (both OS and the Hyper-V). Has Netflix as Windows 8 app. I use classic shell so it boots to desktop and I have the XBMC autostart.

The Multimedia software I use is both XBMC and PLEX. The XBMC gives me great media options when its connected to my LED TV and the PLEX gives me great server option when I have my other PC’s or iPad connection. My other PC’s in the house normally use XBMC and point to my new server. Its a bit of hassle configuring but my family is use to the interface and it has better selection for add-ons then PLEX.

Now I have a multimedia PC connected to my large LED TV and its running all the time. Lots of space for my ripped movies and music and space for more. Why most of my drives are RAID 1? I don’t want all the movies I ripped disappear on a hard drive failure. That’s my paranoid kicking in.

The Hyper-V is running a version of Windows 7 where I can remote in and use the PC for other things while the main PC is playing movies etc.

It might have cost me a bit of money but at least it should last me for many years.

Windows XP Connect To Windows 7 Share Looses Connection

Have a Windows XP PRO PC connecting to a Windows 7 PRO that has a shared folder. After a day or so the connection to the share stops and can’t access the Windows 7 PRO. Other Windows 7 PC’s are not affected. I found this on the Internet:

Locate the first key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache

By default this value is probably set to “0” and needs to be changed to “1”
Then locate the following key:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters\Size

By default this value is probably also “0” and needs to be changed to “3”\

I got this here

Internet Problem. Gateway is 0.0.0.0

New client had an issue of getting on Internet. Running Windows 7 64-Bit and has Adobe CS3. Adobe is the cause. It installs Apple Bonjour and the Bonjour conflicts with the Gateway. The best way to verify this is your problem is open a Command Prompt and type  ipconfig   If you see your default Gateway is 0.0.0.0 before the real Gateway then you have to disable the Bonjour.

A temporary fix is in a Command Prompt (Run as Administrator) type the following:

route delete 0.0.0.0

then

ipconfig /renew

This only fixes it until you reboot.

The real thing is to disable the bonjour.

Type the following in a (Run as Administrator) command prompt:

32-Bit Windows:

“C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

64-Bit Windows

“C:\Program Files (x86)\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe” -remove

You should then rename the mdnsNSP.dll file that is in the same Bonjour folder to mdnsNSP.old

Reboot your PC and everything should be working.

Here is one of the websites I got this info from.

Microsoft Windows 8. I feel going ahead and going back!

I have been a long Windows fan. I started from Windows 3.0 and up. When they went to Windows NT kernel I believe this is the start of a real OS they produced. Before this I thought Amiga and OS2 really was a real OS. Everyone I know will say OH I hate Windows because of this or that. Myself if you have the right PC equipment with Windows OS then its the best of both worlds. It runs everything and is really stable! If you live in the Apple OS for Desktop/Laptop. Sure they have a great stable OS but try running Simply Accounting. Oh you need a VM to run this. I tried Ubuntu as the main OS but again the problem is the apps. Its like the phone. I use to be a Blackberry fan. But when iOS and even Android blew them away with quality apps  I changed. 10,000 BB apps vs 600,000 apps Dah!!. And sure the iOS has major control at least I know it won’t be an app that will virus/spyware me!!. If you are in the business world you need to run a real Windows app and then you will need a VM. Why not really run the app in true Windows. With Windows 7 or 8 with 64-bit that you can run everything you want and have a very satisfy OS that is stable. Some people will give Microsoft a bad RAP because they have experience the old MS OS. Windows 7 and 8 and even most of XP have been a major stable OS. If you start tinkering with stuff or start with a crappy motherboard then this is different.

Now about Windows 8. I like the quick start-up. I like the added features with monitor/application description. I like a few other features built in. The extra Windows 8 apps is OK. Feels like 2 OS in one. The normal Windows XP/7 apps and then the Windows 8 apps. I can get back the start menu with 3rd party apps. I can get back some of the gadgets (widgets). The thing that drives me crazy is MS!! Why take these features away. They should give them an option. The other MAJOR thing that drives me crazy is Aero!!! I love Aero!! It makes the OS modern!! Taking it away and giving me a flat Windows 8 feel makes it go back in time!!! Apple introduces really cool looking affects. Ubuntu with rotating cube affects is really cool. Windows 8 style looks like something from the the forty’s They are going back in time!! MS excuse is battery life!! Why not give the user an option. If you want to save battery life use the ugly way. If you are on a desktop and don’t care about battery then give me a very attractive way!!. UUUGGHH!!!!!

I know why MS did Windows 8. To try and compete with Apple’s tablet market. But really!! Apples tablet is successful because they made a phone that was very popular. The phone created a lot of apps. They then made a tablet that works with those thousands of apps and also the tablet apps on top. Its not the hardware people its the software. Its really ironic if you think of it. MS made software and dominated the PC world. Apple tried to make hardware and provided OS but never worked. NOW Apple rules the home world. WHY? Because of the SOFTWARE!! And great hardware. If Apple created the greatest phone but had no software (apps) behind it! It would have never gone the way it has!! Now MS is trying to make HARDWARE to compete against Apple.

Really boggles the mind!!

Anyhow what I believe the next Windows 9 should be  (or Windows 8SR2). Is bring back the start menu (like Classic Shell that gives both Programs and Apps), widgets, and AERO!!!!

Everytime I look at Windows 8 I feel so cheated with the looks. IT LOOKS LIKE CRAP!!!!! Windows 7 Aero looks modern. Why take it away??? So you can push Windows 8 apps down our throat!!

Let me know how you feel!!

Shutdown Metro-Style Apps In Windows 8

Great article from Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite on How to Shutdown Metro-Style Apps in Windows 8

Impliment AHCI after Install of Windows 7 in IDE mode

Found this on the Internet.

A little guide:

I am receiving a lot of emails from users who bought a SSD drive, installed Windows 7 in IDE mode and then realize they need AHCI mode for faster SSD performance. Once you enable that in the BIOS during Windows 7 boot up, the OS will crash.

The common question is, is there a solve for this ?

To answer that question (and I do this safely with all Intel ICHR9/10 chipsets) there is a way to safely enable AHCI mode. Here we go:

1. Startup “Regedit
2. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SYSTEM / CurrentControlset / Services
3. Open msahci
4. In the right field left click on “start” and go to Modify
5. In the value Data field enter “0” and click “ok”
6. exit “Regedit”
7. Reboot Rig and enter BIOS (hold “Delete” key while Booting

In your BIOS select “Integrated Peripherals” and OnChip PATA/SATA Devices. Now change SATA Mode to AHCI from IDE.

You now boot into windows 7, the OS will recognize AHCI and install the devices. Now the system needs one more reboot and voilla .. enjoy the improved SSD performance.

We have not tested this on Vista though.

Update — we tested and this tweak works in Vista 100% the same.

AMENDMENT:

For those who have Windows 8 the registry has changed from the above to the following:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\storahci

Modify the StartOverride to 0 and then restart (remembering to change the BIOS when rebooting to AHCI)

TCP/IP fails on SBS after Windows Update IPSEC Blocked

Have had this on several SBS 2003 servers where after a Windows update the server can’t ping anything, can’t ping the server. In the event log you see IPSEC Blocked. What you have to do is edit the registry. Here is the Windows article.

Basically add the following registry items:

IPSEC-ADDPORTS

Kill Windows NT Service That Hangs On Starting Or Stopping

Had to use this a few times. Comes in handy. I got this from Kuhnline.com Thanks!

  1. Go to the command-prompt and query the service (e.g. the SMTP service) by using sc:

    sc queryex SMTPSvc

  2. This will give you the following information:

    SERVICE_NAME: SMTPSvc
    TYPE               : 20  WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
    STATE              : 4  RUNNING
    (STOPPABLE, PAUSABLE, ACCEPTS_SHUTDOWN)
    WIN32_EXIT_CODE    : 0  (0x0)
    SERVICE_EXIT_CODE  : 0  (0x0)
    CHECKPOINT         : 0x0
    WAIT_HINT          : 0x0
    PID                : 388
    FLAGS              :

or something like this (the “state” will mention stopping).

  3. Over here you can find the process identifier (PID), so it’s pretty easy to kill the associated process either by using the task manager or by using taskkill:

    taskkill /PID 388 /F

where the /F flag is needed to force the process kill (first try without the flag).

SBS 2003 Internet Wizard fails On Firewall

I have a client thats running SBS 2003 and someone changed some settings on the companyweb. When I tried and run the Internet Wizard to create a new SSL Certificate it failed on the Firewall. I found this article that helped me fix it rather than try a reinstall of IIS etc (which is a pain when dealing with Exchange). I had to create the companyweb option. It gave me an ID of 448260875 so I entered that into the registry and ran the wizard and all is well. Thanks Alan! Local Copy of Article
