Unable To Create File Error When Opening Attachment In Outlook

Have a client that scanned a ton of documents into his email. What he got when he tried to open one of the attachments is an error “Unable to create file”.

Search on line and found this thread.

Here is the solution:

Problem:
Upon trying to open or preview an attachment (.pdf, .doc, .wav, etc.), an error comes up saying “Unable to create file…” and asks you to check the folder’s permissions. If you right-click the file and save it to the system locally, it opens without an issue.

Reason:
Outlook uses a hidden temp folder (or sometimes two folders) to create these files in when previewing them or opening them using Outlook or one of the previewers installed with it. When multiple attachments with the same filename are opened (i.e. “collate.doc”), Outlook will incrementally number the filenames in the temp folder from 0-99; when it reaches that maximum (99) it cannot create a new temp file and thus won’t let you open or preview the file.

Solution:
Locate the hidden folder(s) using the Registry Editor’s search feature and delete the contents, then restart Outlook and the problem should be resolved.
1.Click “Start” -> “Run…” and type “regedit” (In Windows Vista or 7, just type it into the search box and hit enter)
2.Click “Edit” -> “Find…” and type OutlookSecureTempFolder
3.When RegEdit has found the entry, it will tell you where your temp files are stored. It will look similar to C:\Documents and Settings\*USERNAME*\Local Settings\Temporary internet Files\OLK*RANDOM NUMBER*
4.Open My Computer and navigate to this location (if you doubleclick the entry in RegEdit, it will open a dialog box which will allow you to copy the path).
5.Delete all of the files in this folder
6.Now return to the Registry Editor and perform the same search again. If it cannot find an entry or shows the same folder, you should be all set. If it finds a different folder (which is commonly similar to C:\Documents and Settings\*USERNAME*\Local Settings\Temporary internet Files\Content.Outlook\*ALPHANUMERIC VALUE*), you must repeat the steps above and delete all of these files as well, otherwise the error will still be present.
7.Restart MS Outlook and the attachment should be able to open without any errors.

Sage 50 Can’t Connect To Database or Can’t Find Connection Manager

Have a client that has 3 PC’s running Sage 50 2013 attached to a Windows 2008r2 server where the Sage data resides. The other day all three were getting mostly Can’t find connection manager. Came across a forum that said the .net framework 4.5 could be causing it. Ran repair on each PC and seems to work now. If that did not work I was going to uninstall and reinstall.

Here is part of the article.

Error: “Cannot open company, there is an error connecting to a database” when opening a data file – 10372

Error: “The Connection Manager could not start the database engine. The database engine reported an error” or “Cannot open company, there is an error connecting to a database” – 11112

Which processes do I need to allow through my firewall? – 10080

If you have tried everything but still not working, you may need to fix your .net framework.  For XP, you can install up to .net framework 4.0.  For Vista/7/8, you can install .net framework 4.5.  You may need to either repair or uninstall/reinstall.

Change Bell Modem/Router Into Just Modem (Bridge-Mode)

Found this on the Internet. You could reflash firmware but I decided to manually change. Here are the instructions:
1. Connect White 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router to phone line, make sure DSL light is on.

2. Connect computer to any LAN port of 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router.

3. Use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or any other browser to access 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router’s web based interface. Default IP address may be 192.168.2.1.

4. Ensure 2Wire 2701HG modem cannot make PPPoE connection – Use INCORRECT Username and/or Password for PPPoE connection settings. Internet Connection –> Advanced Settings.

5. Disable DHCP Server on White 2Wire Modem/Router. Local or Home Network –> Advanced Settings.

6. Disable Wireless on 2Wire 2701HG – it is useless now and will not work anyway. Local or Home Network –> Wireless –> Disable.

7. Disable Firewall on 2Wire 2701HG Modem/ Wireless Router. Application Support –> Advanced Settings –> uncheck Stealth Mode and Block Ping. Save Settings.

8. Now White Modem/Wireless Router 2Wire 2701HG is working in Bridge Mode.
Disconnect computer from 2Wire Modem/Router.
Existing Internal Router needs to be connected using it’s WAN port to any 2 Wire’s LAN port (any one 1-2-3 or 4 , but use just one).

9. Setup Internal router to dial PPPoE connection using RIGHT Bell Username and Password.
If wireless access is required – use only Internal Wireless Router as a wireless access point.

Clone Drive On Dual Boot Gives Error

I have a dual boot setup on my 1 PC. I have Windows 7 installed on a 1 TB drive. I then added a second small SSD drive and installed Windows 8.1 on this. This gives me a dual boot option. I can boot into either OS. I decided to upgrade my small SSD Windows 8.1 to a larger SSD. I used Acronis to clone the drive. Cloned the drive fine. Placed the larger drive where the smaller one is and then I got an error on bootup. This is because the boot loader (which is on the Windows 7 drive) could not find the smaller drive. I needed to modify the boot loader file in order to point it to the new drive. I search online and found a utility called EasyBCD. I booted into the Windows 7 OS. Downloaded and installed EasyBCD and then changed the Windows 8.1 option to point to the new drive. Rebooted and then I could boot into Windows 8.1. If I was changing the Windows 7 drive I don’t think I would have had this issue. This only happens when changing the second drive that does not contain the boot loader file.

Firefox Tip: Add Close button on one Tab

I’m a Firefox user. I like the option of closing the window when there is only one Tab open. You can do a keyboard shortcut of CTRL-W but I prefer the little close X on the Tab. To do this you go into the about:config in Firefox. Look for

browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab

Click on it and change from true to false.

Thats it!

Dropbox vs Google Drive vs OneDrive

Over the years I have tried and use the main syncing utilities to sync files from PC to PC. They are great for what I do and can’t see how to live with out them. I started with Dropbox since its the oldest. There was a product before I use to use till MS bought them out and turned them into Skydrive/Onedrive. I was mad because at the time it dropped support for XP. The nice thing with Dropbox is that its compatible with everything. They have an app for everything. The bad is compared to the others for free its small. I did the extra stuff like recommend to others etc to get extra free space. I currently have 6.2 Gig free. Google has 15 Gig and I actually have 25 Gig free with a promotion. With the MS Office 365 I have also 25 Gig on Skydrive.

The biggest reason I use Dropbox for the majority of my files is reliability!! I get conflicts all the time with Google Drive and Skydrive. I rarely get conflicts with Dropbox. I have clients and myself with clients data and its a big pain with the conflicts issues. The other major reason to use Dropbox (both for me and my clients) is Dropbox keeps versions in the cloud. This saved one of my clients job when she accidentally had a sync setup and moved it or something and it deleted everything on Dropbox (cloud and all PC sync data). All data was restored from the cloud because it keeps deleted items!. If it was Google Drive or Skydrive all data would be lost if there were no backup!!

This is my view let me know what your experience is.

Outlook 2013 Hangs Loading Profile

Have a client that is running Office 2013 on Windows 7 Laptop. Outlook was working fine. Then one day when she tried to open Outlook it would hang on Loading Profile. I can start the Outlook in safe mode (Outlook.exe /safe). So I disabled all add-ons and tried it again and it still would not start. Sometimes it would after a few minutes but most of the time would not. Searched online and found sometimes the Aero Theme in Windows 7 can cause the issue (Don’t know why it works fine for me on my PC) and you have to disable the acceleration graphics. You can try and disable in safe mode but it does not stay. The only solution was to edit the registry and add a key to disable the acceleration graphics.

Here is the info:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Graphics
DWORD: DisableHardwareAcceleration
Value: 1 to disable

In my case I had to add the Graphics key and then add the DWORD with the value of 1. After this it started fine in normal mode.

I got this info from Slipstick Systems. Thanks Slipstick.

I also created a BATCH FILE that does the same thing.

Word cannot open because a dialog box is open. Please close the dialog box to continue

I got this message whenever I opened a Word document from Outlook with MS Word 2013 installed. It worked fine if I already had Word open before trying to open the .doc or .docx file from Outlook.

Searched online and found a solution. It basically removes some of the extra security in Word.

Open Word 2013

Click File-Options-Trust Center

Click the Trust Center Settings…

Click the Protected View and uncheck all the options

Now you won’t get the annoying error message.
