NTLDR is Missing

Got this on a machine the other day. Have not seen it for sometime. I ran the usual chkdsk /r on the drive and that did not fix it. Backed up the drive and was going to do a Windows repair (Windows XP Home PC) but did not give me the option to repair from XP OEM CD (The second repair that actually copies Windows files back on, not the first repair that gets me to a DOS prompt). So I remembered that all I did last time was copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM from the XP install X:\i386 file. Both files were missing from the root of C:. After that everything booted. So in a nut shell is when you get this error on boot. Boot from your XP Install disk. Press R to get to the login prompt. Check if the NTDLR and NTDETECT.COM are on the root of C: and copy the 2 files from the CD’s i386 folder to the root of C:.

Repair Windows Updates After Removing Fake Anti-Virus in XP

After removing a fake Anti-virus the XP PC would not do any Window’s Updates. Found this on the web:

Open C:\Windows

Show hidden files and folders

Open C:\Windows\inf

Right click au and select install (extension hidden by default, should be only file named au)

After install complete may ask for restart, if not restart anyway

Hide hidden files and folders

Windows updates should now work

ADDENDUM:

MS now makes a great Fixit Utility that should fix all Windows Updates issues

Outlook 2010 POP Email To Go Into Exchange

MS made Outlook 2010 to act like the rest of the suite but one of the BIGGEST complaint I have is clients that use MS Exchange and have POP accounts. 2010 decided to keep everything separated! I did find this on the Internet to help those who would like all the email to be stored in the exchange mailbox and not it a separate PST file that does not get backed up:

1 – Configure Exchange Account and set as default

2 – configure POP3 account and create new outlook file without download any mail

3 – select in account settings the button CHANGE FOLDER for the POP3 account and choose the INBOX folder of the EXCHANGE account

4 – in the folder tree of outlook 2010, right click the pop3 account tree and select close PST

THIS worked for me very well…

Windows 7 SP1 Review

Well SP1 is out and for most Windows 7 users it will not really do a lot for you. Most of the updates is the normal updates since 7 has been out. One of the fixes that it does actually did worked for me is the HDMI sound issue. My PC attached to my TV through HDMI had issues with sound over HDMI. I basically just attached speakers to the PC and worked fine for me except some movies were very low volume and could not really hear them. Now the HDMI sound is fixed and I can hear those movies fine.

Installation took about 1/2 hr on most of my PC’s. My faster desktop took only 15-20min. Again it had all the standard updates already so it did not need to install that much. Anyone who does a clean install of Windows 7  will take a longer time since it will need to download the whole updates. If you have to do a lot of new installs it would be best to download the big file first from Microsoft and then run it then.

Windows 7 Chkdsk, The Memory Hog

What program built into Windows 7 will eat almost all your RAM no matter how much you have. Chkdsk. Running it from a command prompt or even the GUI it will eat the RAM (at least from the command prompt you can kill it easily. The GUI you have to log off or restart). Google Windows 7 chkdsk bug and you will see a ton of responses. I found this out just recently when I wanted to check an issue I have with an USB 3 drive. I ran the Chkdsk /r on a drive, glanced at my system resources a few minutes later and saw that the 12 Gig’s of RAM I have was being used 95%!!! Googled the Chkdsk and see that MS really has not fixed this BUG. They seem to not claim it as a BUG. I claim it as a BUG/Memory Leak issue. They should at least cap the chkdsk to only use a percent of the memory you have not all the free RAM you have. Nice going Microsoft!!

AMENDMENT:

If you use the 32-bit version of chkdsk it will limit to 4GB. See my other post

Fix MBR For Windows 7

The main commands to run at the dos prompt are

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

bootrec.exe /fixboot

Convert IDE to AHCI on SATA Drives

Here is a great article by TechRepublic in changing your Sata configuration from IDE compatible mode to AHCI (As long as your BIOS has this option).

How Did My PC Get Malware Infection?

I get this question all the time. Most of the PC’s that I see have peer to peer software installed. This is not the only way you can get infected. CRN just did an article that describes Facebook is infected.

Here is a great article from BleepingComputer.com that describes the many ways you can get infected. Also another article that’s good.

The first program I use to remove malware is Malwarebytes. The paid resident program is worth every penny.
